Official Opinions: WPCS is Assembling the Masses in Lincoln Park

We all know there are a million things to do in the Chicago summertime- from festivals to farmers markets to biking and picnicking  movies in the park, etc. But for those of you looking for some cool FREE relaxation on these hot summer nights check out the latest Wicker Park Choral Singers’ concert- Assembling the Masses.  Concert times are below:

Saturday, July 9 at 8:00 p.m.  St. Vincent de Paul Church | 1010 W. Webster Ave., Chicago, IL
Sunday, July 10 at 2:00 p.m. Grace Episcopal Church | 120 E. 1st St. Hinsdale, IL

Many of the pieces on the concert are movements from liturgical mass settings, such as Poulenc’s Mass in G Major and William Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices. The selections also include a completely different meaning of the word “mass” with works representing nine different countries from four different continents, eight different centuries of music history, and six different languages.

The concert program runs about an hour followed by a reception to meet and interact with the performers.  The repertoire includes short choral works by: Byrd, Poulenc, Machaut, Guillaume, Thompson, Palestrina, Duruflé and others.

Stitely Staffer, Rachel Mikolajczyk, has been a part of the choir since its inception in 2008.  I’ve been a member of the WPCS almost since its inception in the spring of 2008.  Originally, a grassroots effort, WPCS has quickly become an established performing arts ensemble in the Chicagoland area with  approximately forty members who are passionate about making world-class choral music accessible to the community, and are committed to producing concerts that are free and open to the public.  With repertoire ranging from Renaissance motets to contemporary works of today’s foremost composers, WPCS aims to provide something to excite and engage each and every audience member.

Hope to see you there!
