Stitely Soundboard: Moments of gratitude

I am one of the most fortunate people in the world to be able to play music for a living and to bring happiness into people’s lives. Sometimes I forget how lucky I am when I get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life and all of its challenges. Last week I had the opportunity to go to Wisconsin with my 8-year-old daughter for a Father-Daughter weekend. It was great to be with her and other dads and daughters to work on our relationship and learn how to be the best parent possible. We had a ton of fun and learned a lot but there are a few moments that really stick out.

One morning we had an assignment to go do “the coolest thing.” It is a time for the daughter to lead dad in some activity that involves discovery and fun. We started walking around the woods that were covered in snow. We started noticing all kinds of animal tracks and tried figuring out what they were. We followed them so we could discover where the animals came from and where they were going. We found tracks for turkey and deer, but the most fun to track were the rabbits. We found paw prints where the bunny was walking, along with oddly shaped paw prints with big gaps in between and two thin lines in front. We eventually figured out that these must have been where the bunnies hopped, all four legs bunched together, ears just barely touching the snow. We started imitating the rabbits’ hops and laughing our heads off. It was one of those “in the moment” experiences that makes life so rich and fun.

Taking the time to get away from the city helped me come back and feel renewed. I realized that you don’t need to get away to create or find these moments. If you are present enough to notice, you will find that they are happening all the time. For example, yesterday our kids were singing songs at the dinner table and acting kind of wild and crazy, but were really enjoying themselves. I caught my wife’s eyes and we had this moment without saying a word. It felt like “this is what it’s all about right now.”

I just love noticing those moments, and I’m lucky enough be able to create them at parties through music and dancing. My two favorite moments of any wedding are the first dance where the bride and groom just get to be together in the music, and the last song of the evening where everyone surrounds the couple and sends them off with a lot of love. These sweet moments remind me of just how fortunate I am to be a part of creating meaningful memories.
