Official Opinions: Frohe Weihnachten

I’ve been living in Chicago for roughly 3 1/2 years now and I’ve tried my best to go to as many Chicago-exclusive events as possible during this time. One of my absolute favorite events is the Christkindlmarket held in Daley Plaza. Now in its 15th year, Chicago’s largest open-air Christmas festival is essentially the one place to go if you like, in no particular order, Christmas, Germans, food and gifts. The event opened on November 24th and runs through December 24th. Christkindlmarket is open from 11am-8pm Sunday through Thursday and on Friday and Saturday nights it stays open until 9pm.

Food and Drinks

Probably my favorite part of the festival, the food is absolutely fantastic. The selection includes German sausage, bratwurst, pretzels, baked apples, and awesome chocolate covered deserts. If you’re on a diet, this is not the place to be. Along with the food, there is a great selection of German beer as well as Glühwein, a hot spiced wine that you most definitely need to try out. Only if you’re 21, of course.

Gifts and Souvenirs

If you are looking for a gift that you won’t be able to find anywhere else, the festival has a plethora of options. One can find a ton of handmade items like holiday ornaments, nativity scenes and authentic cuckoo clocks. The detail in these works is unbelievable. They aren’t exactly the cheapest gifts that one could buy, but the amount of time and care put into creating them makes it worth the cost. A few of my family members were very thankful to receive them last year.

You also get the opportunity to listen to some traditional German tunes and holiday songs. Glen Sorgatz and the Alpine Brass provide the background music to a great evening. They will be playing every weekend for the rest of the festival.

Take some time out of your busy schedule and enjoy some holiday festivities at the Christkindlmarket. The Christmas spirit will certainly make your day brighter. And if that doesn’t work, the hot spiced wine will most definitely do the trick.
