Official Opinions: Cupcakes in Chicago

Whether you’re looking for a quick treat to satisfy your sweet tooth or a spread of decadent delights for your next party or wedding, cupcakes are the new trendy way to go. Although the ever so popular cake is not out (they are more intricately designed than ever), cupcakes have come on strong. Due to their popular demand, creative flavors and designs have been made, and even more solo cupcake shops have been born.

So forget the cake-cutting knife at your next event and check out four of Chicago’s well-known cupcake shops and what they have to offer.

More Cupcakes, located in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood on 1 East Delaware Place, was founded in September 2008 by Patty Rothman in a modern art museum meets cupcake storefront. The store sells a wide variety of handcrafted originals, as well as seasonal specialties. Offering both local and national delivery More Cupcakes also celebrates special occasions by catering parties and weddings. For a free taste of what More has to offer you can Like their Facebook page, where they post pictures of their cupcakes on a regular basis for their fans to tag. If you are one of the first 50 to tag yourself as the cupcake you will receive a free cupcake. Good Luck!

Up next is Molly’s Cupcakes located in Lincoln Park on 2536 North Clark Street. Named after the owner’s 3rd grade teacher, they donate a portion of every cupcake to schools in the community. Offering a wide variety of cupcakes available both in store or made to order, one is sure to find what they are looking for, including those looking for vegan or gluten free cupcakes. Classic flavors including chocolate, vanilla, carrot, and red velvet can be topped with 5 different frostings along with a variety of fun toppings such as sprinkles or candy. If you are interested in something with more filling, one can chose from the center-filled cupcakes such as Boston Cream or peanut butter nutella and as the seasons change so do the center-filled specialties. Whether you’re looking to sit down and read a book or meet a friend to catch up, Molly’s has the perfect atmosphere to sit and enjoy the cupcakes.

If you are looking for a place in the Loop, Sugar Bliss Cake Boutique is located on 115 North Wabash and offers a wide variety of daily flavors to meet every customer’s taste buds. Teresa Ging, who left her career in the finance field to move to Paris and attend a pastry institute, opened the retail location in 2008 after perfecting more than 20 flavors and successfully launching her catering and delivery services from home. Sugar Bliss offers the regular daily flavors including Black & White, Vanilla Vanilla, Chocolate Milk Chocolate, Vanilla Milk Chocolate, and Red Velvet. Beyond the daily flavors each day of the week has 5 different cupcakes ranging from Banana Banana to Chocolate Peppermint. The boutique also offers seasonal flavors, mini cupcakes, and frosting shoots in over 10 different flavors.

Last but not least, the Cupcake Counter is located on 229 West Madison Street (between Wells and Franklin). Owned by a mother-daughter team, the store opened after the “gals” (the name the duo gave themselves) decided to take on an entrepreneurial challenge. After putting all their energy, heart, and soul into the shop they came up with 4 everyday flavors consisting of butter, chocolate, red velvet, and carrot, as well as daily surprises that keep their clients coming back for more. Baked fresh daily, they also do individual orders for any special event, large or small, and now do delivery inside the Loop.

Although the city is filled with many cupcake shops, this is my list of 4 that I recommend you try. Whether you are looking to grab one on the go, serve an entire party, or sit down and enjoy the yummy treat, each of the 4 cupcake boutiques surely has something that will satisfy your taste buds.
